Lillian worked at a diner, it wasn’t one of those family kind of diners — it was the 24 hour kind. The kind that had the sleazy men and drugged up women on their break from a tiring shift. Lillian worked from 7am the day of to 7am the next day running on a dollar fifty coffee. For every few hours the coffee didn’t work she’d take ten minute power naps behind the grubby kitchen door. Lillian was a twenty three year old who worked ever since she was fifteen supporting herself just so she could live above the crappy diner trying to be something. Lillian was quiet and kept to herself, she led a meaningless life, but the uneventfulness kept her going, she didn’t do well with drama so she steered clear from socializing and the supposed warmth of others.

Today was New Years Eve but it was just like any other day for Lillian. Party streamers hung carelessly above the entrance door, tacky party hats and cheap colorful napkins lay on each table. She wondered who on Earth would spend their New Years here but the same locals that came in proved otherwise. The elderly couple Prudence and Wilbert swore upon the heavens their love was as pure as freshly lain snow, everyday they came in whispering sweet nothings in their gravelly used voices. Wilbert would pour sugar in his wife’s tea and smile while Prudence would blush ardently. If you were a passerby you’d admire their old timey love, a love that you wished you had.
